Patey Park

Aberdeen, Scotland

Case Studies

Patey Park is a true reflection of the values that Timberplay believe in. A playground inspired by nature and designed to promote imaginative play for children of all ages and abilities.

Patey Park in Chapleton of Elsick, Aberdeen, is named after the famous Scottish Climber, amongst other accolades, Tom Patey. Fittingly the playground has been designed to create a sense of adventure for children through natural elements and materials.

Landscape Architect Laura Scott Simmons, who headed the design of the park commented; -

“Delivering any play area in the height of a pandemic would have been challenging – but being determined to deliver something that was different to the norm and relied on its landscape setting to provide the majority of the play value – simply added to the challenge. A supportive and patient Client, together with a determined and inventive ‘lock-down’ site team made it possible.”

The play area uses natural elements in the form of various grassed mounds, fallen logs, rocks and boulders to create incidental play opportunities. Whilst paths and art features allow for further exploring and visual opportunities. Included within the scheme is one of Timberplay Scotland’s most interactive and popular pieces – the Hexagonal Swing.

The Hexagonal Swing promotes social play as well as the normal focus of any swing, physical development. It allows children to swing in groups towards each other, watch each other or even touch each other’s feet. It promotes collaboration and communication in an educational but fun way.

Laura further commented -  “The selection of the only element of play equipment within Phase 1 was carefully considered: it needed to be a focal point within the play area, provide both physical and social play opportunities and cover a broad spectrum of potential users. The Hexagonal Swing satisfied the criteria perfectly. As we observe how the users interact with the various spaces created, it will inform how we refine and expand the requirements for future phases of Patey Park.” – Laura Scott Simmons, Benton Scott Simmons.

Timberplay Scotland are delighted to have had a small involvement in this project and credits the design team, local community and client for their dedication to creating such a natural and inspiring space for everyone. It is a space that champions everything we believe in, and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for the park as it further develops.
