Union Terrace Gardens

Union Terrace Gardens

Aberdeen, Scotland

Case Studies

Union Terrace Gardens has been used by the local community since its opening in 1879. In need of an uplift, the site was closed for refurbishment and re-opened in late 2022, including a brand-new play space and sensory garden with Timberplay Scotland kit!

Landscape architects, LDA Design worked on the detailed scheme, including a new play space focused on sensory development as well as physical play opportunities for all ages and abilities. In the main area, a Climbing Structure with a Hammock provides climbing opportunities as well as informal seating for people of all ages.

A bespoke mound slide is positioned on the top of an over 10-metre mound with a combined tunnel and open slide that moves right to left for the ultimate sliding experience!

Dance Chimes, Wind Pipes and a Ferraphone are dotted through the site provide a chance for users to enjoy sounds and create their own music. Whilst a Large Singing Stone and Conferences allow users to user their voices to transmit messages and sounds.

Lighting is used throughout the gardens to provide a welcoming and safe space for all no matter the time of day, making Union Terrace Gardens one of the most used public spaces in Scotland.
